While this place wasn’t quite what I was hoping for, it did turn out to be a quaint little place that provided a nice quiet dinner. Being a sucker for pizza I didn’t quite study the menu like I should have, but I did notice it had a decent selection of the usual Italian entrées. Without hesitation we ordered the cheese pizza. It was delivered to our table piping hot and caked with cheese, just the way I like it. It tasted good and was extremely filling.

There are other places in the city to get a better pie, but not many that provide the nice quiet ambiance of Nomad II. We had a couple of drinks with dinner and our bill was relatively average. The service was quick and on the spot. We didn’t have to ask for anything special and they were quick in asking us if we wanted another beverage.

There was one couple a few tables away that might not agree with me as far as the service is concerned. He asked the waitress for a straw. She didn’t have any on her at the moment she went to get one. He waited all of 8 seconds before I heard him bitching to his wife about not having a straw. 8 seconds after that he decided he would just get up and find one himself. This was a guy that was hell bent on having a straw. I guess what I’m saying is if you absolutely have to have a straw as soon as you get your drink you should probably just bring one from home. If not then you probably won’t have any qualms with Nomad II.

In closing you will most likely find that Nomad II is nothing out of the ordinary but you will be hard pressed to not enjoy yourself. Unless you’re super sensitive about straws.

OK, let’s begin with an apology – no pictures. I usually stop by this place at 6 AM and am in no mood for taking pictures. Plus the lighting would suck.

Now with that out of the way a short review – I have only had their coffee but they offer the other accoutrements that most places have (scones, muffins etc.). The coffee is excellent as they know what they are doing. Free Wi-Fi and games in a decidedly upscale modern environment always make for a comfortable visit. I usually like my coffee house to have more of a folksy lesbian feel (read Red Cup) but this place feels much more born again (I have seen a few bible study groups here) – if ya know what I mean.

But really none of this is why I frequent this place. Service. The guy that owns the place runs the place and makes you want to come back. A good guy that has taken a chance, invested some money and ALOT of hard work and is proud of what he offers. This translates into everything – including the java – and just makes you kinda feel guilty for going to Starbucks instead.

So stop by, have a cup, take some pictures and send ‘em to me. I obviously need some help.

Old Germany Restaurant

Well here it is. My first and only rating of perfect 10. The review will be short because it really doesn’t matter what you order, it will be good. Very good. I believe this rating will stand up to any challenge so I encourage the other reviewers here to try this place out.

A quick editorial note in the spirit of full disclosure is required at this point. My family is good friends with Mike Turik who owns and operates Old Germany with the rest of his family. They have been on several of the Old Germany sponsored wine tasting trips abroad, regularly attend special tastings and have even volunteered at the annual Oktoberfest they sponsor. I don’t think any of this results in any bias on part because I don’t think they even know who I am and if they did I might be banned due to a minor indiscretion with a Turik niece when I was in high school. But I digress..

Old Germany is off the beaten track in Choctaw but is worth drive. It sits in a cute looking German style building and the interior has a warm feel - they even have a really cool “cellar” room that looks like you are in a cave. The wait staff is extraordinary, the beer menu unsurpassed, the wine list untouchable and everything from appetizers to desserts are top rate.
I won’t even bother to describe any particular dish as they are all overwhelming good. Brats, schitnitzels, steaks – there is no wrong way order.

The only drawback to this place is that like all German restaurants – it is not cheap. You will need to be prepared to spend at least $35 per person with wine, dinner, gratuity etc. Their lunch menu is much more affordable but just as tasty, so if you find yourself on a tight budget this is a good way to try the place out for under $12.

My pictures suck but fortunately you can see much better ones at their web site, oldgermany.com as well as view full lunch and dinner menus. There are even pictures of their sponsored wine tours, etc..

So to sum this up, you NEED to get yourself to Choctaw ASAP but just don’t tell Mike I sent ya..

Bobo’s Chicken
Usually on 23rd Street between Lottie and MLK ???
Usually open from 7PM – 4AM on Friday and Saturdays

Bobo’s Chicken may be the most infamous eatery in OKC but although everyone seems to have heard of it, very few have actually had it.

For the uninitiated, Bobo’s is a concession trailer that can usually be found parked off 23rd street (see map above) and only opens late at night on Fridays and Saturdays. It is usually easy to spot as they put HUGE flood lights. There are underground rumors that others have seen it during lunch hours and at other locations but I for one have only seen it in this one place as early as 7 PM and as late as 4 AM. If anyone has a sighting please post it here!!

So why have so few people actually eaten from this place? Well, how do I put this delicately… Bobo’s is located in one of the highest crime areas in the city and attracts a sometimes mean looking crowd – depending on when you show up. After 2 AM this place can look like the set of a Tupoc Shakur video shoot. I have actually seen two midget Latino gangsta rappers get out of a low rider with hydraulics (I swear you can’t make this stuff up!!) Although I have never had any problems, I have felt threatened on occasion and have heard stories about shootings and the like. Personally, the air of adventure of going here is kind of fun (until I get jacked).

So why would you travel to one of the worst parts of the city in the middle of the night and brave being mugged, shot, etc.?? Great fried chicken of course!!!
They do a few things here I had never encountered before – first they smoke the chicken before breading and frying it. When you get this stiff in the car it actually smells like barbeque. Next, with every order they include some fried bread (ummm..), French fries with a spicy seasoning sprinkled on and if you want -they pour honey over the top it all. Now the thought of covering fried chicken and French fries with honey seemed wrong to me but as it turns out it is pure genius when it comes to this stuff. They also have catfish baskets (excellent) and shrimp (never tried it) – sans honey here I think.

Prices are good as well you can get a 7 piece wings-n-things chicken basket for 10 bucks and it will easily feed two.
Please post your Bobo’s stories and pics here as everyone I know that has eaten here usually have a good one. In the mean time do as they say and “Follow your nose to Bobo’s”.  Just be sure to watch your ass while you are doing it.

Mr. Tee’s Bar-B-Que

MR TEE’S BAR-B-QUE

Having lived in Kansas City for a short time I think my Bar-B-Que street cred is pretty high for an Okie so the following review should be treated as gospel unless you can prove your resume is better than mine.

Mr. Tee’s is a small hole in the wall joint on the East side that has the same look and feel as some of the best KC bar-b-que places. That is to say crappy. They offer Ribs, brisket, sandwiches and all the normal sides and some dessert items. They have two kinds of sauce (Hot and Mild) that are tasty. I have tried just about everything on the menu and although nothing is bad, there are only two items that really stand out as excellent. Ribs and cake… Read the rest of this entry »
